Gyeongnam Culture & Arts Center is Jinju’s major provincial performance complex, bringing a large theater, exhibition spaces and public cultural programming together beside the Namgang River
The building has more personality than many regional multipurpose halls. Its design came from architect Kim Chung-up, and the complex uses strong geometric forms, layered public spaces and river-facing areas that give the venue a civic presence beyond the auditorium itself. The programming remains broad, spanning commercial touring work, classical music, theater, dance, traditional arts and exhibitions
The experience
The main hall is the center of gravity. It seats 1,528 across two levels and is equipped for large productions including musicals, opera, ballet, theater and concerts. Exhibition rooms and supporting spaces extend the venue’s use beyond performance nights, while the lobby and lookout areas make the Namgang setting part of the visit
The layout is easier to understand than a multi-building campus, but visitors still benefit from checking whether they are headed to the main auditorium or an exhibition room. Parking is available, yet the center itself advises public transport when the site is busy
History
The project began with a design competition in 1981, won by Kim Chung-up. Construction started in 1984 and the center opened in August 1988 as a provincial cultural institution
The building later underwent a major renovation and reopened in 2009. The main stage was further remodeled in 2014, and the institution expanded its production role with the creation of the Gyeongnam provincial arts troupe in 2020 and a dedicated creative building completed in 2022
That timeline explains the center’s current role: it functions both as an established piece of modern Korean cultural architecture and as a working venue that continues to support new production and touring performance
