Aqua Planet Ilsan
A four-storey Goyang aquarium that combines large marine tanks with indoor zoo habitats and animal programs
Large-tank viewing, marine ecology presentations, walrus and seal programs, jungle animals, parrots and Sky Farm encounters
A vertical four-storey complex with major aquarium floors below and Jungle and Sky Farm animal zones above; the large Deep Blue Ocean tank anchors the marine section
Ilsanโs strength is structural variety: the visit keeps changing habitat, scale and viewing mode instead of relying on one headline tank
An aquarium that keeps changing habitat
The route at Aqua Planet Ilsan moves from deep-water exhibits into indoor animal habitats across four storeys. A 2,000-ton main tank anchors the marine floors; higher zones introduce birds, mammals and a rooftop-style farm, giving the complex a deliberately mixed aquarium-and-zoo identity
Opened in 2014, the complex was conceived as a convergence of aquarium, zoo and botanical-garden functions. The building reinforces the idea: its curved exterior was designed to suggest a cruise ship, with decks and wave-pattern curtain walls wrapping a 14,000-plus-square-metre interior. It was also the first Korean aquarium developed with an indoor zoo as part of the same attraction
The main tank is engineered as a room
The complex holds roughly 4,300 tons of water, with a main tank holding up to 2,000 tons. In Deep Blue Ocean, the tank is large enough to function as a space people gather around rather than a display case passed in a corridor
The principal viewing panel is roughly 10.7 metres long and just under 6.1 metres high, with acrylic about 46 centimetres thick; the panel had to be bonded on site because of its size. The jellyfish tanks use a horseshoe shape designed to maintain continuous water flow, avoiding the dead corners that can trap jellyfish in a conventional rectangular tank
The water spaces also host scheduled interpretation. Ocean Arena runs ecological presentations, while the main aquarium route includes penguins, seals and other marine life alongside the large-tank displays. These programs make the scale of the tanks feel operational as well as visual
The route leaves the sea behind
After the marine sections, part of the visit shifts into Jungle and Sky Farm areas, with presentations around jaguars, parrots, ponies, rabbits and other land animals. Ocean Arena adds walrus and seal presentations, while Parrot Village was designed for close interaction with birds
A family that arrives expecting tunnels, sharks and jellyfish eventually finds itself in spaces closer to a compact indoor zoo. Ilsan was conceived as an ecosystem attraction, and the buildingโs vertical layout keeps introducing a new scale, enclosure and type of animal encounter
The mix also explains why the place has remained a substantial regional attraction beside Ilsan Lake Park, Kintex and One Mount. Its identity does not depend on one signature species; it comes from the contrast between large marine infrastructure and the terrestrial habitats above
Before you go
The distinctive part of Aqua Planet Ilsan begins where the aquarium shifts into the upper animal zones. Families focused mainly on the main tank can cover the marine core relatively quickly; a fuller visit includes the Jungle, Sky Farm and scheduled ecological presentations as separate parts of the same complex. The building is large enough that treating the upper animal zones as an exit corridor misses much of what makes this branch unusual
