Aqua Planet Yeosu
A major aquarium inside Yeosu Expo Ocean Park, built as a four-level aboveground complex for Expo 2012 and organized around large marine tanks, tunnels and species-focused zones
Families, large-tank aquarium visits, sharks and rays, penguins and marine mammals, rainy-day Yeosu plans and visitors already exploring the Expo waterfront
A vertical aquarium inside the Expo district, with Ocean Life, Marine Life and Aqua Forest zones, a 16-by-6-metre main viewing window, a roughly 40-metre underwater tunnel and a 360-degree dome tank
Aqua Planet Yeosu is strongest where its Expo architecture and aquarium design meet: the building stays above ground while the visitor route repeatedly creates the sensation of moving inside or beneath much larger bodies of water
An Expo aquarium built to stay above ground
Aqua Planet Yeosu opened with Expo 2012 as one of the fair’s main visitor facilities. Its unusual architectural fact is still easy to understand today: the aquarium was built entirely above ground across four levels, with its largest water spaces kept above the site
That choice gives the building a different relationship with the Yeosu New Port waterfront around it. The aquarium remains a large visible object inside Expo Ocean Park, and the interior route rises through named zones within the aboveground structure
Solar power was part of the original environmental concept, linking the aquarium to the Expo’s marine and sustainability theme. The fair ended, but Aqua Planet remained as one of the district’s permanent public attractions
Ocean Life changes the sense of scale
The strongest spatial sequence sits in Ocean Life. Its main tank is viewed through a window about 16 metres wide and 6 metres high, with rays, sharks and giant groupers moving across one continuous field of water
From there, the route changes the viewing geometry. A roughly 40-metre underwater tunnel puts marine animals overhead as well as beside the visitor. The Aqua Dome goes further: its 360-degree tank surrounds the sightline instead of keeping the aquarium on one side of a flat viewing panel
The main tank also supports scheduled feeding interpretation, which makes the large mixed-species habitat easier to read as an ecosystem rather than simply a wall of moving animals
The upper route separates different marine worlds
Marine Life adds more species-specific spaces, including African penguins, sea lions, Baikal seals and a beluga viewing area. Aqua Forest shifts away from open-ocean scale toward freshwater and forest-linked aquatic environments, creating a clear change of habitat across the building
That vertical separation is useful for families because the visit has distinct chapters. Large sharks and rays create the spectacle; smaller habitat zones slow the pace; marine-mammal areas introduce animal-care interpretation; the main tank and tunnel provide the architectural climax
Sea-turtle conservation belongs mostly behind the scenes. Aqua Planet Yeosu breeds, treats and releases turtles in dedicated care facilities; this is institutional conservation work rather than a rehabilitation room included in the ordinary visitor route
Before you go
A typical visit takes about two hours. The aquarium is inside Expo Ocean Park, where ordinary vehicles cannot drive directly to the building; drivers use surrounding Expo parking and walk through the park
Rail is one of the simplest approaches for visitors without a car. Yeosu Expo Station sits beside the Expo district, leaving the final approach as a short walk through the park rather than another cross-city transfer
- Hours
- Open year-round from 09:30 to 18:00. Admission ends one hour before closing; allow about two hours for a typical visit
- Admission
- Individual admission: adults 39,900 won, youths/elders 37,900 won and children 34,900 won. Age-based free entry and discounts require the stated ID or age documents
- Access
- Elevators serve the exhibition floors. Wheelchairs and strollers can be borrowed, and major second-floor aquarium zones are step-free
- Transit
- For rail arrivals, use Yeosu Expo Station and enter the adjacent Expo Ocean Park; Aqua Planet is inside the park and the final approach is on foot through the Expo grounds
