COEX Aquarium
Seoul’s long-running Gangnam aquarium, opened in 2000 and rebranded as SEA LIFE COEX in 2025, with a one-way route from freshwater habitats to the city’s best-known shark tunnel
Shark and ray viewing, freshwater and tropical exhibits, penguins and seals, feeding talks, mermaid performances, jellyfish media art and optional glass-bottom-boat experiences
A one-way underground aquarium inside Starfield COEX Mall, divided into themed zones that move from freshwater and rainforest habitats toward large shark tanks and an underwater tunnel
The route matters more than any single tank: local freshwater fish, Amazon species, sharks and rays arrive in sequence, so the underground aquarium builds toward Ocean Kingdom and the tunnel instead of presenting disconnected rooms
The route still follows a journey through water
When the aquarium opened in May 2000, its organizing idea was a “Fantastic Water Journey.” The current SEA LIFE rebrand has changed names, graphics and several zones, but the basic logic survives: visitors move through a fixed sequence rather than choosing galleries from a central hall
One of the clearest early stops is Our Spot, Our Fish, which follows Korean freshwater from ponds and rice fields through the upper, middle and lower reaches of streams. Amazonia World then shifts the scale and geography completely, with electric eels, arapaima and other river species in a recreated rainforest setting. The progression matters because the aquarium is physically a walkthrough; the route itself supplies the narrative
The sharks are the old core that survived the rebrand
COEX has built its identity around sharks for much of its life. The aquarium says some of its larger sharks have been here since the early years, and its present Ocean Kingdom remains the main tank, holding sandbar, sand tiger, zebra and reef sharks alongside rays
In the Deep Blue Sea Tunnel, visitors pass beneath the tank while sharks and rays cross overhead instead of looking through one flat window. The tunnel was already the memorable image of COEX Aquarium in reporting from 2010, long before the 2025 SEA LIFE branding, and it remains the point where the old aquarium and the new presentation overlap most clearly
SEA LIFE added a different layer in 2025
In July 2025, COEX Aquarium formally became SEA LIFE COEX, Seoul Aquarium. The location did not change, but the attraction introduced new branding and later added zones such as Sea at Night, where jellyfish are paired with light-based media art. The glass-bottom boat is more physical than the name suggests: it runs directly above the shark tank, with sharks passing beneath the transparent floor while visitors can also feed fish
That change makes the current aquarium more theatrical than the original 2000 institution. Feedings, a mermaid performance and optional paid experiences sit around the same core collection. For a first visit, the useful distinction is simple: the newer layer is entertainment and immersion; the older strength is still the sequential movement from freshwater habitats into large marine tanks
Being inside COEX changes the visit
The aquarium entrance sits on B1 of Starfield COEX Mall, so it works differently from a stand-alone aquarium reached only for the aquarium itself. Bongeunsa Station Exit 7 is about three minutes from the mall entrance, while Samseong Station connects from the opposite side of the complex
That setting makes a 90-minute to two-hour aquarium visit easy to combine with the rest of COEX, but it also makes the internal route worth respecting: re-entry is not allowed, so meals, shopping or Starfield Library are better treated as before-or-after stops rather than interruptions
Before you go
The aquarium is a continuous walkthrough and usually takes about 90 minutes to two hours. Feedings and performances vary by day, so their timing is worth checking at entry if one matters to the visit. The final marine zones carry most of the large-scale spectacle, so families moving slowly through the early interactive areas should leave enough time for Ocean Kingdom and the tunnel
