Danuri Aquarium
A large freshwater aquarium beside the Namhangang in Danyang, with local river species, an eight-metre main tank and habitat galleries added in 2025
Namhangang fish, golden mandarin fish, giant freshwater species, the eight-metre main tank, amphibians, reptiles and habitat-based ecology exhibits
A multi-level aquarium inside Danuri Center with more than 200 tanks, an eight-metre main tank on B2 and newer Ecorium, Atrium and brackish-water zones
Danuri keeps freshwater ecology at the center even as the collection ranges far beyond Danyang, from native river fish to arapaima and other global species
The aquarium starts with the river outside
Danuri Aquarium sits beside the Namhangang in Danyang, and its freshwater identity begins with that river system. The aquarium’s ecology map follows fish from mountain valleys into rapids and then into the middle and lower river, grouping mandarin fish, Korean bitterling and other native species by the water conditions they inhabit
The golden mandarin fish, a yellow form associated with the Han River system, keeps the local river visible inside the collection. Farther along, red arowana and arapaima extend the freshwater story to Asian and Amazonian rivers
An eight-metre tank gives freshwater fish unusual scale
The current aquarium holds about 30,000 animals from roughly 319 species across 203 tanks containing about 1,300 tonnes of water. Its largest tank rises about eight metres
Native fish share the route with much larger freshwater species. Red arowana and arapaima add a very different sense of scale, while tanks themed around the Eight Scenic Views of Danyang keep the local landscape in view
The 2025 expansion added whole habitats
Danuri opened in May 2012, but the present aquarium is much larger than the original. A major expansion formally opened in July 2025, adding habitat-based spaces alongside the enlarged tank collection
One new Ecorium room places a cylindrical tank around a tree-root form at the center of the gallery, while projected habitat imagery spreads across the surrounding walls. Elsewhere, the renewal combines tanks with sculpture, lighting, video and sound. Ecorium covers temperate, tropical-savanna and tropical-rainforest habitats with fish, amphibians and reptiles. Atrium focuses on survival strategies such as hunting, camouflage and reproduction, while a brackish-water zone covers the transition between fresh and salt water
The new rooms broaden the range of habitats while keeping freshwater species at the center
