Cafés spread across Bongmyeong

Bongmyeong’s café district is scattered across an entire neighborhood. Cafés began appearing here in the early 2000s, and today the central blocks contain even more restaurants and pubs; north toward Chungnam National University, the commercial geography tightens into Gung-dong’s student streets

Around Yuseong Oncheon Station, Bongmyeong mixes bakeries and individual cafés into a broader evening district. One fixed anchor is GOM Espresso: it began in 2008 in a roughly 10-pyeong shop, and its current Bongmyeong flagship is at 15 Bongmyeongseo-ro. Other cafés and bakeries are separated by ordinary commercial blocks. Yuseong Oncheon Station exits 6, 7 and 8 form the main subway approaches to these blocks

Gung-dong compresses around Rodeo Street

Gung-dong grew closer to the university gate. By 2005, Rodeo Street had become Daejeon’s representative university district with only about a decade of commercial history behind it. Restaurants, bars, shops and student housing concentrated quickly around Chungnam National University

The city repeatedly treated the street as a specific commercial corridor. Gung-dong Rodeo appeared in a 2010 citywide sign-cleanup program and in a 2011 alley-regeneration proposal; Yuseong-gu was still commissioning a Rodeo Street revitalization project in 2020

The street remains the more compact student-facing half of the district. Its shopfronts and nightlife sit closer together than Bongmyeong’s scattered café geography, which makes the change between the two areas visible over a relatively short distance

Startup offices moved into the university grid

Gung-dong has acquired a second identity since 2020. Daejeon Startup Park began expanding through Gung-dong and neighboring Eoeun-dong, using a network of smaller buildings along and just off Daehak-ro instead of one isolated business campus

A June 2025 district count listed eight Startup Park buildings in the area with 48 resident companies. Addresses such as Daehak-ro 157, Daehak-ro 179 and Daehak-ro 179beon-gil 7-12 place that infrastructure directly inside the same university streets used by students

The wider Eoeun–Gung area now operates under the “EoGung” startup identity, linking Chungnam National University and KAIST with startup support, coworking and investor networks. In 2026, the district expanded that policy into procurement support, overseas-market programs and a city-campus course tied to Chungnam National University

The two halves reward different expectations. Gung-dong is the tighter student grid for inexpensive meals, bars and the Rodeo Street core; Bongmyeong spreads cafés, bakeries, restaurants and pubs across a wider area around Yuseong Oncheon Station. The startup buildings in Gung-dong are working infrastructure. Their addresses explain why office and founder traffic now shares the same streets as the traditional university crowd
