Samsung Electronics union Donghaeng Union has taken an unusual labor campaign to one of the world’s most visible advertising locations, placing a short video on a Times Square billboard in New York. The message, translated as “Great products begin with people,” puts employees at the center of the union’s public argument about how the company should think about its workforce.
The advertisement matters less for its 15-second length than for where it appeared. Times Square is a global commercial stage associated with major brands, product launches and corporate image campaigns. By placing a labor message there, the union is deliberately using the same language of reputation and brand value that multinational companies normally use for marketing.
The wider context
Donghaeng Union represents employees centered in Samsung Electronics’ Device eXperience division. Its campaign links working conditions and employee recognition to the quality of products consumers ultimately see. That framing shifts the dispute away from a narrow internal labor issue and toward a broader claim that human capital is part of Samsung’s competitiveness.
The Times Square placement also gives the campaign an international dimension. Samsung is one of Korea’s most recognizable global companies, so a labor message displayed in New York can reach foreign consumers, investors and employees as well as a Korean audience. The union is effectively arguing that workplace issues belong in the same public conversation as technology, design and corporate performance.
The significance now depends on whether the advertisement remains a symbolic one-off or becomes part of a wider pressure campaign. Further public actions, bargaining developments or a response from management would show whether the union intends to keep using Samsung’s global visibility as leverage in its domestic labor agenda.
