Bangchukcheon stretches through central Sejong as a linear stream park, but the music fountain changes how one section is used after dark. During the May–October season, showtime draws walkers into a compact riverside audience around music, colored light and water
The fountain sits inside a wider linear park. Bangchukcheon runs through central Sejong with planted waterfront areas and public spaces distributed along the stream, so the show works as a temporary point of focus inside a place that is otherwise experienced by moving through it. The rest of the stream remains open to walkers, keeping the gathering concentrated without interrupting the wider promenade
The experience
Before dark, the stream reads mainly as a promenade. Paths follow the water through a planned urban district, with planting and small public-space zones giving walkers several reasons to continue beyond the fountain site. The fountain itself occupies a relatively small 165-square-meter riverside installation
At showtime the scale changes. Music and lighting pull attention toward the water, and the audience tends to face one compact section instead of dispersing along the stream. When the fountain resumed in 2022 after a two-year pandemic pause, attendance averaged about 200 visitors a day during summer and reached roughly 500 at peak times
Because each show lasts only about 20 minutes, it changes the rhythm of a longer walk without taking over the evening
History
Bangchukcheon was developed as themed waterfront public space within Sejong's new urban fabric. The music fountain was built in 2014 and began operating in 2015, adding programmed sound and light to a stream corridor already designed for walking and waterside use
The fountain stopped during the COVID-19 period and returned in May 2022 after lighting repairs, restoring the evening program after roughly two years
The basic pattern has remained seasonal. The facilities corporation operates the fountain in the warmer months and adjusts or cancels performances for rain and equipment problems
Before you go
Use the show as the fixed point and the stream as the flexible part of the visit. Arriving early gives time to walk Bangchukcheon before the audience gathers; after the performance, the same riverside returns quickly to a quieter linear park

- For the 2026 season, shows run May 15–October 15: weekdays at 20:30; weekends and public holidays at 19:30 and 20:30. Each session lasts about 20 minutes and can be suspended for rain or facility problems
