Character

The old downtown is still mapped into Chungjang-ro’s blocks. Fashion and accessories concentrate through 1-ga to 3-ga; 4-ga and 5-ga retain a stronger hanbok trade. Those specializations preserve the structure of a corridor that once held far more of Gwangju’s shopping life

Empty units interrupt the same pattern. Dong-gu’s 2025 survey counted a 27.28% vacancy rate among units available for rent across the Chungjang commercial revitalization zone; sales and monthly floating population had also fallen from 2022 to 2024. The old center’s contraction is measurable in both storefronts and movement through the district

The result is a street where commercial history remains useful for orientation. Different blocks still advertise different kinds of shopping, even though the district as a whole now shares central Gwangju with newer retail and nightlife areas elsewhere in the city

The experience

Chungjang-ro works better as a sequence of commercial blocks than as a single attraction. Around 1-ga to 3-ga, fashion, accessories, cafés, restaurants and entertainment create the busiest contemporary shopping layer. Continuing toward 4-ga and 5-ga brings more hanbok and specialist retail into view

The change is gradual rather than theatrical. Older shop types, vacant units, newer businesses and redevelopment projects occupy the same streets, so the district reads as an active commercial center under pressure rather than a preserved historic quarter

Its location strengthens a wider downtown visit. The Asia Culture Center and Geumnam-ro sit close enough that shopping streets, civic space and cultural institutions can be experienced as one central-Gwangju area, with Chungjang-ro providing the commercial layer

History

Chungjang-ro took its current name in 1946. During the decades that followed, central Gwangju concentrated major fashion, entertainment and meeting functions here, and the corridor developed into one of the city’s defining commercial districts

The internal specialization became part of that identity. Official tourism material still distinguishes 1-ga to 3-ga for fashion malls, clothing and accessories from 4-ga and 5-ga, where hanbok businesses remain more prominent. A recent academic study of Chungjang-ro’s fashion culture likewise treats the district as a major site in the formation and development of Gwangju’s modern commercial style

Gwangju’s later expansion redistributed that role. New residential and commercial areas, large retail facilities and online shopping changed where people spent money and time. Dong-gu’s 2025 business-district survey, reported in 2026, recorded simultaneous pressure in vacancy, sales and floating population and identified changes in consumption and movement patterns among the structural causes

Current regeneration programs use festivals, branding, themed streets and vacant-space projects to bring activity back into the district. Those interventions belong to the latest stage of Chungjang-ro’s history: a former dominant downtown adapting to a city whose commercial life now has several centers

Choose the part of Chungjang-ro that matches what you want to see. The 1-ga to 3-ga side is the practical starting point for contemporary fashion and general shopping; 4-ga and 5-ga give a clearer view of the older specialist-trade structure
