Dadaepo Beach & Sunset Fountain of Dreams

Dadaepo is made from sand carried out of the Nakdong River and reworked where the river meets the South Sea. The beach’s wide sand field, tidal flat, dunes and ripple marks are modern estuary features that continue to gain and lose sediment

Seasonal forces keep changing the shoreline. KIOST found that wet-season river discharge favors deposition, while stronger marine energy in the dry season contributes to erosion. Human changes around the estuary also affect how sediment moves and accumulates

Busan National Geopark points to the results along the beach: coastal dunes, dune plants, ripple marks, tidal flats and sand-bubbler crabs. At the eastern end, much older rocks of the Dadaepo Formation appear beside the modern sand, including conglomerate, sandstone, siltstone and mudstone

The experience

The beach is unusually broad and shallow. Saha-gu describes a 900-metre shoreline roughly 100 metres wide, with water remaining around 1.5 metres deep even about 300 metres from shore. Low tide exposes much more of the flat coastal surface and makes the transition from dry sand to wet sediment especially obvious

Dadaepo Beach Park, completed in 2015, adds lawns, an ecological trail, showers, foot-washing facilities and other amenities behind the beach. A separate foreshore experience area is used for tidal-flat ecology activities

Near the main entrance, the Sunset Fountain of Dreams adds a different evening attraction. Opened in 2010, the circular fountain spans 60 metres and sends jets as high as 55 metres. Its music performances are seasonal, while the beach and park remain usable independently of the show calendar

History

Dadaepo lies within the modern Nakdong River delta, a landscape built by repeated river deposition and marine reworking. A 2022 KIOST study reconstructed the beach over roughly five decades and found three major stages as it shifted from a more marine setting toward its present estuarine form

Public recreation infrastructure arrived much later. The Sunset Fountain of Dreams opened in 2010, and Dadaepo Beach Park was completed in 2015. The park, fountain and beach now occupy the same stretch of coast, while the foreshore continues to respond to river discharge, waves and tides

Before you go

The tide changes how much of Dadaepo’s sand and mudflat is exposed, so two visits at different water levels can look quite different. For a geology or ecology-focused visit, continue beyond the fountain plaza to the dunes, ripple marks and wider foreshore

The fountain is seasonal and has its own operating calendar, separate from ordinary beach access. Its performances can also be cancelled in heavy rain, strong wind or typhoon conditions. Dadaepo Beach Station on Metro Line 1 is the simplest public-transport anchor for both the beach and fountain area
