Daepo Jusangjeolli Cliff

At Daepo, the cliff face is a cooling pattern made large. Thick basalt contracted as it lost heat, opening vertical fractures that divided the lava into polygonal columns; coastal erosion later exposed those columns side-on above the sea

The protected formation extends for about one kilometre and reaches roughly 30 to 40 metres high. Four- to six-sided columns dominate the public view, but geological studies of the Jisatgae section show that the pattern is not mechanically uniform: column widths and the number of sides vary across the lava body as cooling conditions changed

That variation matters more than the usual claim that the rocks look carved. The geometry came from shrinkage inside a cooling flow. What appears architectural from the lookout is a fracture network repeated through a large mass of basalt

The experience

The path stays above the coastal cliff, so the columns are seen across the rock face rather than from among them. From the viewing area, they appear in stacked bands and broken faces, with the sea exposing their lower ends. The distance makes the regularity easy to read: long vertical lines, polygonal cross-sections and collapsed blocks at the foot of the cliff belong to the same lava body

Wave action adds a second scale. Official Jeju tourism information notes that rough seas can throw spray more than 20 metres into the air against the columns. The water does not create the jointing, but it continually clears and erodes the coastal face that makes the internal structure visible

The named attraction is only one window onto a longer geological belt. Research on the Daepodong basalt traces columnar-jointed rock for several kilometres along this part of the coast, while the protected public site concentrates attention on the most accessible and visually continuous section

History

The formation was first protected locally as a Jeju monument in 1998. In January 2005, the Jungmun and Daepo coastal columnar joints were designated National Natural Monument No. 443, with a much larger protected area extending beyond the main visitor platform

Daepo later became one of the original geosites of the Jeju Island Global Geopark, recognized internationally in 2010. That designation placed the cliff alongside Hallasan, Manjanggul, Seongsan Ilchulbong, Sanbangsan and Yongmeori as part of a wider volcanic record rather than as an isolated scenic lookout

The old local name survives in “Jisatgae,” still used for the rock formation and in geological literature. Modern research has examined not only the cliff’s appearance but also the dimensions, mineral composition and cooling structure of the Daepodong basalt itself

Before you go

The visitor site is compact, and the principal experience is the coastal viewing area rather than a long walk. Opening times can shift with sunset, and poor weather may restrict access to the lookout
