Character

The Jungle Dome is visible before its plants are. Its 7,472 triangular glass panels form a 30-metre-high shell over 4,468 square metres, giving Geoje Botanic Garden enough interior height for paths, planting and viewpoints to occupy several levels

Inside, tropical and subtropical planting shares space with rock gardens, a constructed valley, a ten-metre waterfall, caves, elevated circulation and an observatory. Visitors encounter trunks and foliage from below, then rise through the dome and look back across the same planting from higher levels

The garden’s identity comes from that vertical movement. Around 300 species and roughly 10,000 plants sit inside a route that repeatedly changes height, enclosure and sightline, so the same planting is seen from several elevations. The dome’s shape becomes part of how the collection is read

The experience

The main visit begins inside the Jungle Dome, where paths and escalators move through dense planting, rock compositions and the waterfall before reaching higher viewing points. Short themed spaces such as the cactus garden and light cave break up the route. The dominant experience is the changing relationship between the floor of the dome and its canopy-height interior

The wider botanic garden extends beyond that single building. Outdoor ecological gardens add southern temperate and warm-climate species, while newer spaces such as Jinteulium focus on wetland plants, ferns and mosses. Jungle Tower, a separate family-oriented activity structure, adds timed climbing and slide sessions to the campus

This mix supports two different visit lengths. The dome works as a concentrated indoor plant-and-architecture destination; the outdoor grounds and activity facilities extend the site into a longer family stop. The paid dome, open garden and activity tower each follow their own operating pattern

History

Geoje began developing the site in 2014 as a large ecological and plant-culture project tied to the city’s agricultural facilities. The work continued through 2019, with public investment of about 28 billion won in the dome greenhouse, outdoor ecological spaces and visitor infrastructure

The Jungle Dome formally opened to general visitors on January 17, 2020. At opening, it was promoted as Korea’s largest dome-shaped greenhouse, with a maximum height of 30 metres and a floor area of 4,468 square metres. Its unusual half-egg form and triangular glass skin immediately made the building itself part of the attraction

Pandemic closures sharply interrupted its first years. Even so, Yonhap reported that cumulative attendance was approaching one million by October 2022. That rapid uptake helped establish the garden as one of Geoje’s major non-coastal attractions and encouraged the site to expand beyond the original dome with additional family and ecological facilities

Before you go

The Jungle Dome, outdoor garden and Jungle Tower are separate operational surfaces. The dome has its own paid admission and last-entry time, the outdoor garden opens earlier, and Jungle Tower uses timed sessions with separate booking rules. A complete visit starts with choosing which parts of the complex matter to you; each follows its own ticketing or operating pattern
