Haeundae Beach & Green Railway

Character

Set a direction before setting out: Haeundae Beach works as the open urban foreground, while the Green Railway carries the coast east from Mipo through smaller ports and cliff-edge views

The contrast is physical. The beach is wide, exposed and backed by towers; beyond its eastern end, the route narrows against the shoreline. Trains, capsules and walkers share the former railway corridor without sharing the same timetable or ticket. The beach establishes Haeundae’s scale, then the old line reveals the coast beyond the skyline

The experience

Begin at the sand if you want the full transition. Walk east toward Mipo, where the promenade tightens and the Green Railway becomes the organizing line. Cheongsapo is the most useful intermediate goal: it supplies a fishing-port pause and a place to decide whether to continue toward Songjeong, return by rail attraction, or finish locally

The public walking route and Haeundae Blueline Park are adjacent but operationally distinct. Walking preserves flexibility and makes the tunnels, cliff edges and changing sea angle the point of the trip. The Beach Train covers the longer Mipo–Songjeong corridor; the elevated Sky Capsule serves the shorter Mipo–Cheongsapo section. Advance booking matters most for anyone building the day around a particular capsule time

History

Haeundae’s shore had long been valued for sea bathing and scenery, but its present resort form belongs to Busan’s modern urban growth. Formal beach management, transport improvements and dense hotel and apartment construction turned the bay into a nationally recognized summer destination and, later, a year-round waterfront district

The rail corridor tells another development story. The Donghae Nambu Line connected Busan and Ulsan in 1935 and carried regional rail traffic along this exposed coast. When the line was relocated and the old alignment closed in 2013, the right-of-way became available for public reuse. Sections were landscaped as the Busan Green Railway, preserving the unusually direct relationship between track geometry and sea

The Mipo–Songjeong section later gained the Beach Train and Sky Capsule as Haeundae Blueline Park, while the parallel path remained open to walkers. The result is layered: a public coastal promenade occupies railway land beside a commercial leisure system, and both now extend the familiar beach eastward

Choose the endpoint first. Haeundae Beach alone suits a compact visit; Mipo to Cheongsapo gives a manageable coastal walk; reaching Songjeong makes the outing longer and rewards a one-way transport plan. General beach and trail access should not be confused with swimming supervision or the operating hours, reservations and fares of the train and capsule
