Jangtaesan Recreational Forest

Jangtaesan’s signature forest was planted tree by tree. Metasequoias introduced from the 1970s now rise in dense straight columns around public decks, resting areas and elevated structures, giving Daejeon a forest landscape whose mature scale was created within living memory

That origin shapes the place more than any single attraction. The tall grove is both the subject and the infrastructure: shade makes the lower forest comfortable, while the skyway and tower lift visitors into the middle layers of the same planted canopy. Native and other planted species extend beyond the metasequoias into a larger recreational forest used for walking, family outings and overnight stays

The experience

The easiest visit stays around the central forest facilities. Broad paths and decks pass through the metasequoia grove, with benches and open resting areas beneath the trunks. The Forest Adventure structures change the viewing height without requiring a mountain hike: elevated walkways and the sky tower place branches and canopy closer to eye level, while the suspension bridge adds another high crossing through the forest

The recreational forest extends beyond those central structures. An ecological pond, botanical learning areas, forest classrooms, hiking paths and viewpoints occupy the wider grounds, and accommodation and camping make longer stays possible. Those overnight facilities operate separately from ordinary day use

Weather matters most for the elevated attractions. Daejeon’s park management notes that Forest Adventure gates may remain closed in rain, wind, snow or at night, even though the broader forest grounds have a much wider access pattern

History

The landscape began as a private forestry project. From the 1970s, forest grower Im Chang-bong invested his own resources in planting the slopes around Jangtaesan, including the metasequoias that later became the site’s visual identity. Over the following two decades the planted forest matured into a recreational destination and, in the early 1990s, became Korea’s first natural recreation forest developed and operated privately

The ownership model changed after Im’s death. Daejeon Metropolitan City acquired the forest in 2002, spent several years remodeling the site and reopened it as a municipal recreational forest on April 25, 2006. The city retained the established woodland while adding public-use infrastructure, accommodation and educational facilities

Later additions increasingly used height to interpret the forest. Elevated decks, the Forest Adventure system, tower and suspension bridge turned the unusually tall planted grove into a three-dimensional public space without changing the trees into a decorative backdrop. The forest’s national profile grew further after a presidential holiday visit in 2018 and repeated inclusion in national tourism selections

Before you go

A short daytime visit can focus entirely on the central metasequoia grove and elevated forest structures. Treat accommodation, camping and organized programs as separate products that need their own booking. If the skyway or tower is important to your visit, weather conditions matter because elevated facilities can close even while the forest itself remains accessible
