MMCA Cheongju

Character

On the first and third floors of MMCA Cheongju, artworks appear in storage format. The spacing, racks and collection logic belong to a working repository, but the rooms are open to visitors as part of the museum

Elsewhere, glass-fronted storage and a visible conservation science laboratory keep collection care in view. The building lets visitors see how art is stored, monitored and treated between exhibitions

Open storage leaves more of the collection visible at once, with racks, labels and care systems built into the room. Inventory becomes part of the display instead of disappearing when an exhibition ends

The experience

The first-floor open storage presents MMCA holdings in storage format. On the third floor, Art Bank holdings occupy another open-storage area beside conservation facilities and the Larchiveum, which combines library, archive and museum resources

Visible storage extends through the upper collection floors behind glass. These rooms still function as collection storage, with temperature, handling and conservation requirements shaping what visitors can see

Conservation adds another layer. During its limited public hours, the third-floor laboratory exposes painting treatment and scientific analysis. The building therefore shows two different timescales at once: the brief period an artwork may spend in a conventional exhibition and the much longer life it spends being stored, studied and maintained

History

The building began as part of Cheongju’s tobacco industry. A major tobacco-processing factory operated here from 1946 until 2004 and employed more than 3,000 people at its peak, making the site a significant part of the city’s industrial economy

After production ended, the factory stood unused for 14 years before redevelopment. MMCA converted the five-storey building into its Cheongju branch, preserving the industrial shell for storage, conservation and public display

MMCA Cheongju opened in December 2018 as the institution’s fourth branch. MMCA described it as Korea’s first storage-type art museum, placing collection storage at the center of the public museum rather than keeping it entirely behind staff doors

The conservation laboratory and Larchiveum keep shorter weekday hours, while Special Storage opens only during designated periods. Their access windows matter most for visitors coming specifically for visible conservation or special storage
