Choose the island route before choosing transport: Hanagae suits a beach-and-boardwalk day, the central ridge suits hikers, and Gwangmyeong Port opens the walk toward Somuuido

Muuido sits close to Incheon Airport yet operates at the scale of tides, ridges and small settlements. Hanagae’s broad flat changes dramatically between high and low water; Horyonggoksan and Guksabong lift the view above the Yellow Sea; roads and village buses stitch together places that remain too dispersed for a single casual stroll

The experience

For a first visit, Hanagae Beach gives the clearest combination of shore, tidal flat and coastal boardwalk. Check the tide if walking the flats matters. The beach is also a practical trailhead for Horyonggoksan, whose 245-metre summit creates a more substantial outing than the modest height suggests

A longer island day can continue south to Gwangmyeong Port and cross the footbridge to Somuuido. Treat that as a separate walking segment rather than an automatic extension: the added distance changes return-bus timing. Silmi Beach creates another tide-dependent possibility on the northwest coast, where the exposed path toward Silmido is safe only under suitable conditions

History

Muuido’s settlements developed around fishing, tidal flats and ferry access, with geography keeping the island socially close to Incheon but operationally separate. Its beaches later acquired a popular-culture layer through the film Silmido and television productions filmed around Hanagae

The decisive recent change came with Muuidaegyo Bridge, opened in 2019 between Jamjindo and Muuido. Cars and public buses could reach the island without the former short ferry crossing. That connection widened day-trip access and altered traffic around beaches and trailheads while leaving the island’s internal distances intact

The bridge to Somuuido added a smaller-scale pedestrian connection at the southern end. Together the crossings changed Muuido from a ferry-timed destination into a road-accessible island area, but visitors still need to organize the day around distinct coastal anchors and the limited cadence of local transport

Before you go

Build the day around one main route and its return point. Carry water for ridge walks, check tide conditions before stepping onto exposed flats, and allow more margin than an urban outing for local buses. The island itself has continuous public access, while beaches, parking areas, leisure activities and private facilities may set separate hours or charges
