Sacheon Ocean Cable Car

Sacheon’s cable car has three stations and two distinct legs. From Daebang, one leg crosses the water to Choyang Island; the other climbs Gaksan, with the two alignments meeting at Daebang at a change of about 26.6 degrees

The full line runs 2.43 kilometres. The Choyang–Daebang side contains a 1,221-metre marine section, including 816 metres directly over the sea at heights reaching about 74 metres. From Daebang, the second 1,201-metre leg rises inland toward Gaksan. The journey therefore changes both direction and ground condition within one cable-car system

All three stations can function as stops. Choyang Station sits a two-to-three-minute walk from Aramaru Aquarium, while Gaksan Station adds a third-floor observatory above the mountain terminal. Daebang is the main ticketing and boarding base, positioned between those island and mountain destinations

The experience

A normal round trip begins at Daebang and serves both Choyang and Gaksan before returning. The operator gives about 20 minutes as the basic riding time, with the technical specification allowing roughly 20–25 minutes depending on operating speed and conditions

The sea leg is the most exposed section. Fifteen of the 45 ten-person cabins have transparent floors, and the line crosses the open-water portion well above the surface. After the island side, the view changes again as the route climbs toward Gaksan and the frame shifts from bridges and islands to the mountain and Hallyeohaesang coast

The three-station structure also gives the ride a stopover function. Choyang can be used for the aquarium and nearby island attractions, while Gaksan gives direct access to the upper mountain viewpoint. A single cable-car circuit can therefore be a short ride, a sea-and-mountain panorama, or part of a longer cluster of Sacheon attractions

History

Sacheon’s cable-car project took shape as a major municipal tourism investment in the mid-2010s. Plans were delayed several times as projected construction cost increased and safety questions were raised; the city ultimately selected a bi-cable system for greater stability. Construction moved ahead with an investment of roughly 59.8 billion won

Commercial operation began on April 13, 2018. At opening, the 2.43-kilometre line was promoted as Korea’s longest cable car and as a new hybrid type combining the sea-crossing appeal of coastal gondolas with a mountain ascent. Forty-five cabins entered service, including 15 crystal-floor cars

Ridership made the line a major Sacheon attraction quickly. It passed 100,000 passengers within 23 days, approached two million by its third anniversary, and exceeded three million cumulative riders in July 2023. The cable car also helped concentrate newer tourism facilities around Choyang Island and the Daebang waterfront

Before you go

Daebang is the practical starting point for most full circuits because ticketing and the main transport connection are there. The operator does not use an advance-reservation system; same-day tickets are issued on site, and online purchases cannot be used on the day of purchase. Temporary maintenance and strong weather can interrupt the regular timetable
