Character

Forest, formal gardens, a lake and wetlands occupy one continuous landscape in Magok. The greenhouse is its most recognizable building, while botanical study and everyday park use extend through four linked zones across the wider site

That scale changes the role of the institution. The Theme Garden holds curated collections, the greenhouse and plant-research functions; the Open Forest, Lake Garden and Wetland Park operate as free public landscape. A botanical garden therefore shares the same ground with lawns, water, habitat and ordinary circulation through a rapidly built part of western Seoul

The experience

The four zones have different jobs. Open Forest is the broad civic entrance from Magongnaru Station, with lawn and visitor facilities. Theme Garden contains the most concentrated botanical displays, including Korean garden traditions and the Plant Culture Center. Inside the greenhouse, tropical and Mediterranean plants are organized around twelve world cities, with an elevated skywalk giving a second view through the planting

Lake Garden opens the site out again around water and long paths, while the wetland zone extends toward the Han River through habitat and ecological planting. This makes a short greenhouse visit possible, but it also supports a much longer outdoor day without repeating the same kind of space

One small building gives the new park an older reference point. Magok Culture Hall occupies the former Yangcheon Irrigation Association pumping station, built in 1928 to drain water from the surrounding agricultural plain. The structure now sits inside a district transformed by large-scale urban development, preserving a physical trace of the landscape that existed before Magok became a research and business center

History

Seoul developed the botanic park inside the Magok City Development Zone as the district itself was taking shape. The project combined two institutions usually separated in the city: a botanical garden for collection, research and education, and a public park intended for daily recreation. Trial opening began in October 2018, and the full park officially opened on May 1, 2019

At official opening the park covered 504,000 square metres and was organized into the same four principal zones used today. Seoul described it as the country’s first project built around an organic fusion of “botanical garden” and “park,” with long-term goals for plant collection, propagation, institutional exchange and public plant culture

The 1928 pumping station inside today’s Theme Garden makes the redevelopment chronology visible at a much smaller scale. It once managed water for nearby farmland; after restoration it became a cultural space interpreting Magok’s agricultural past. The park therefore contains both the machinery of the former landscape and the botanical institution created as the surrounding district urbanized

Before you go

Decide whether your visit is centered on the greenhouse and Theme Garden or on the wider park. The outdoor Open Forest, Lake Garden and Wetland Park are free and open around the clock, while the Theme Garden and greenhouse have separate opening hours, Monday closure and admission. Magongnaru Station is the simplest entrance for the broad park; Yangcheon Hyanggyo Station is more direct for the Theme Garden
