Songjeong Beach

In the 1990s, Busan windsurfer Meehie Seo began learning to surf at Songjeong and later opened a surf shop here. The beach became one of the places most closely associated with South Korea's early modern surf culture

Songjeong has shallow water, a gentle sandy slope and waves mild enough for beginners on many days. Surf schools and rental shops grew along the shore, turning conditions long valued by family swimmers into a practical place to learn to ride a board

Summer swimmers and year-round surfers now share the same sand. During the managed beach season, Busan separates surfing from ordinary swimming areas so both activities can operate along the shoreline

The experience

Board racks, schools and rental shops line the beach road, and lessons regularly begin on the sand before students move into the shallows. The shallow water and manageable waves still make Songjeong one of the country's best-known places for beginner lessons

The sandy beach runs for about 1.2 kilometres. At the northern end, Jukdo Park adds a short wooded walk above Songjeonghang Port, ending at Songiljeong Pavilion and views over the beach and the red-and-white harbor lighthouses

During summer, lifeguarded swimming operates inside marked zones while surfing continues in designated areas. Outside the managed swimming season, the beach remains open and surfers continue to use it through the cooler months

History

Songjeong was known for decades as a family beach, helped by its shallow water and gradual slope. In the early 1990s, competitive windsurfer Meehie Seo encountered shortboard surfing here, learned the sport and became one of the people who established the early local scene

Surf schools and shops later became a permanent part of the beachfront. Busan began holding the Mayor's Cup surfing competition at Songjeong in 2009; the event has continued annually and now includes international competitors, beginners and stand-up paddleboarding divisions

Surfing is now built into the way Busan manages the beach. During the summer season, dedicated surf zones operate alongside marked swimming areas, and the city includes Songjeong in marine-leisure programs beyond ordinary bathing
