Taean is protected as a moving coast. Wind, waves and a large tidal range continually redistribute sediment; erosion studies and the Hebei Spirit recovery record show how disturbances enter and persist within that physical system
Character
At Taean, the beach and the dune are parts of the same moving sand system. Waves deliver sediment to the shore, wind carries dry sand inland, and the dune stores it. Surveys at Hakampo and Anmyeon found that sand extraction and coastal structures disturbed that exchange and accelerated beach and dune erosion
The tidal range is roughly seven metres. Mudflats, sandy beaches, dunes and rocky erosional landforms sit unusually close together, and a 2019 inventory recorded 390 geomorphological and geological resources, including sea cliffs, caves, wave-cut platforms, sea stacks, tidal flats, dune wetlands and folded rock
Sinduri gives the wind-built side of that system its clearest form. Taean County dates the beginning of the coastal dune field to around 15,000 years ago, after the last Ice Age, with strong seasonal winds repeatedly carrying beach sand inland. The dune is a long-term store of moving sediment as well as a landscape in its own right
The experience
Taeanhaean stretches as a sequence of separate coastal sections along 198 kilometres of the Taean Peninsula and Anmyeondo. Different sections foreground different processes: dunes around Sinduri, long sand beaches around Mongsanpo and Gijipo, rocky shore around Padori, and island-studded water farther south
Tide state can change a section more than distance does. At Mongsanpo, low water exposes muddy intertidal ground beyond the sand beach; hours later much of that working surface is under water again. On dune-backed beaches, low tide extends the visible landscape seaward, adding wet sand and intertidal ground in front of the beach before the incoming tide covers them again
The Taean Coastal Trail links parts of this geography. No section resolves into a single endpoint; beaches, headlands, tidal flats and dune systems repeat in different combinations along the peninsula
History
Taeanhaean became Korea’s 13th national park in 1978. The designation protected an unusually mixed coastal system, and KNPS now describes it as the country’s only coastal-type national park
On 7 December 2007, that protected coast became the center of Korea’s largest oil-spill disaster. A collision roughly ten kilometres off Taean released about 12,500 kL of crude oil from the Hebei Spirit. Oil reached beaches and intertidal habitats rapidly, including national-park shoreline
The first recovery phase was intensely physical. About 1.2 million volunteers ultimately joined the cleanup. Contemporary government accounts describe people carrying oiled sand, wiping contaminated rocks and reaching into crevices by hand. The number matters because much of the work remained stubbornly small-scale: repeated manual cleaning spread across a contaminated coast
The environmental recovery then ran on several clocks. Later monitoring found residual oil concentrations returning to background levels after about 16 months in seawater, 33 months in oysters and 75 months in sediments. Damaged benthic communities required roughly six years
Biological recovery also produced visible field evidence. By 2015, the Ministry of Environment was reporting little tern nesting and an increase in Kentish plover breeding sites at several Taean beaches, which KNPS treated as evidence that the coastal ecosystem was stabilizing
