Character
Grass covers a low rise above Dojangpo, with the sea behind it and a Dutch-style windmill on the skyline. The scene stays open from almost every side, so small shifts in position quickly change the overlap of hill, windmill and horizon
The site sits immediately above Dojangpo, where the southern Geoje coast opens toward Haegeumgang. Few buildings interrupt the slope. Wind and exposure keep the landscape visually spare, leaving the horizon, grass and windmill to dominate the scene
The experience
The climb is short. From the village side, the wooden approach gains enough height to detach the view from the harbor below, and the windmill appears against a broad band of sea and sky. The hill is compact, so a few steps can change how the windmill, coastline and water line up in the frame
Windy Hill fits naturally into a larger southern-Geoje day, especially with Dojangpo, Haegeumgang cruises or the route toward Oedo. Strong coastal wind changes the exposed slope physically; conditions can feel markedly different from the sheltered village below
History
The place was attracting attention before the windmill appeared. Television dramas and variety programs used the open hillside as a filming location in the early 2000s, helping spread the name Windy Hill beyond Geoje. Grass, sea and a clean horizon already gave cameras a ready-made setting
The Dutch-style windmill arrived in 2009, after filming had begun building recognition around the hill. Its silhouette gave photographs and broadcasts a single object that could be recognized immediately. Over time, the windmill and the slope became inseparable in the public image of the place
By the 2010s, photographs of the windmill against grass and sea had become the standard image of Windy Hill. The landmark is recent, but the open slope and coastal exposure are what give it room to stand out
Before you go
Treat Windy Hill as a short outdoor stop and leave room for weather. The exposed coast can be much windier than the village approach, and wet grass or wooden surfaces deserve care. Dojangpo is the practical arrival point; from there, the hill is reached on foot. A longer visit usually makes sense when combined with nearby coastal attractions
