Character

Woljeongri Beach pairs shallow turquoise water and relatively consistent surf with a dense line of cafés, restaurants and lodging along the coastal road immediately behind the sand

The beach works in two directions at once. Some sections stay shallow enough for family water play during the supervised season, while more consistent waves support surfing and other water sports. Behind the road, large café windows and outdoor chairs frame the same sea from dry land

Those chairs became part of Woljeongri’s image. Official tourism material notes that cafés placed seating toward the water and photographs from those spots spread widely, helping make the shoreline a destination viewed from café terraces as much as from the sand

The experience

The contrast is immediate: a short walk can move from surfboards and wet sand to glass-fronted cafés, then back to the beach without leaving the same strip

Jeju Olle Route 20 passes through the area, so walkers arrive on the same coastal road used by café traffic and beach visitors. Outside the compact café zone, the road becomes quieter and the wind turbines along the coast regain visual prominence

The beach therefore rewards more than a quick photo stop. The water, surf and road frontage are physically close enough that moving between them becomes the actual visit

History

Woljeong-ri’s name is commonly explained as meaning “the moon stays,” but the village’s modern tourism identity is much newer

As the beach became better known, cafés, restaurants and accommodations accumulated along the coastal road. A 2017 academic study of Woljeong-ri documented that early urban-to-rural migrants remodeled older farmhouses into guesthouses and pensions, while later arrivals increasingly built new two- and three-storey commercial buildings

Tourism pressure changed public space as well. The same research records growing parking problems and the paving of sandy land beside the beach for free car parking

That physical change is what makes Woljeongri more than a beach with cafés. The popularity of the water gradually redrew the village edge behind it

Before you go

Supervised swimming is seasonal even though the shoreline remains a year-round destination. Woljeong also receives extended evening supervision for part of midsummer, while surfing and café use follow separate operating conditions
