The high-speed railway reaches Yeosu at the edge of the former Expo grounds. From Yeosu Expo Station, the main site is about a five-minute walk, placing long-distance arrival beside the waterfront complex built for the 2012 international exposition

The fairground still reads as one large piece of city rather than a single attraction. Current management lists the Big-O, Sky Tower, Expo Digital Gallery, memorial hall, aquarium, art spaces and sports or experience facilities across the waterfront, while the convention centre continues to rent halls for conferences, exhibitions and other events

The sea remains part of the plan. The Expo was organized around “The Living Ocean and Coast,” and the main public spaces were built on Yeosu’s shore rather than behind it. Today the open grounds, coastal walking areas and Big-O keep the water visible between buildings that now have independent programs and operators

The experience

Scale is the first practical fact. The 2012 Expo occupied 25 hectares, and the surviving grounds still stretch from the station side toward the waterfront attractions and the approach to Odongdo. The current operator publishes separate walking, half-day and full-day ways of using the site, which reflects how differently the same campus can function as a promenade, attraction cluster or event venue

The public realm and the paid facilities overlap without sharing one timetable. A walk through the grounds can include the former Expo architecture and waterfront without entering a ticketed attraction; Sky Tower, Aqua Planet, museums, media-art spaces and other facilities operate as separate destinations inside the same district

That arrangement also changes the site through the day. Convention users, rail arrivals, aquarium and museum visitors, hotel guests and people using the waterfront all enter the same broad area for different reasons. The Expo site therefore works less like a preserved fairground with one prescribed sequence and more like a mixed urban campus whose original event geometry still organizes movement

History

Expo 2012 Yeosu ran from 12 May to 12 August 2012 as a Bureau International des Expositions recognised exhibition under the theme “The Living Ocean and Coast.” The 25-hectare event recorded 8,203,956 visits and 103 official participants, concentrating international attention on oceans, coasts, climate and marine technology for three months

Preparation changed more than the exhibition site. The BIE credits the Expo period with major infrastructure investment, including the high-speed railway linking Seoul with the entrance to the grounds as well as wider road and bridge improvements. That transport investment placed the fair at a new long-distance arrival point instead of isolating it from the rest of the city

After the closing date, the site continued through institutional reuse rather than wholesale removal. The Expo management organization was established to carry the event’s legacy and use its facilities, while former Expo buildings and grounds took on gallery, performance, conference, tourism and leisure roles. The current convention centre, exhibition facilities and visitor attractions make that post-event phase visible in everyday operation

The result is a legacy measured partly in urban structure. A temporary international event ended in 2012, but the rail terminus, waterfront public space and large program buildings it assembled still occupy the same edge of Yeosu
