Yumin Art Nouveau Museum

In 2017, Tadao Ando’s 2008 meditation hall at Seopjikoji changed jobs. Genius Loci became an Art Nouveau museum, and a building conceived for slowing down before a landscape began leading visitors toward fragile French glass made more than a century earlier

The conversion was not automatic. Jeju’s museum review committee worried that inserting storage and exhibition functions might damage the original architecture and asked for Ando’s written consent. After the project was explained to him in Osaka, Ando approved it

The collection had its own history. Yumin Hong Jin-ki had spent years collecting glass from the Nancy school; the museum opened in the year of his centenary with 47 works selected for public display. Among them is Émile Gallé’s 1902 Mushroom Lamp. Only five are known to survive worldwide, and the Yumin example is described as the best preserved of the group

The experience

The museum begins outside. Ando’s route passes water, exposed concrete and rough Jeju basalt before descending into the galleries. Architectural accounts describe the pond as an echo of Baengnokdam, the approach as the island’s mid-mountain country and the wall of falling water as the coast. The building does not offer the whole landscape at once; openings and turns release it in pieces

That slow exterior sequence now leads into a deliberately darker exhibition world. The collection includes Gallé, the Daum brothers, Eugène Michel and other makers associated with Nancy, where glassworkers layered colored glass, carved it, etched it and pushed floral and marine forms far beyond ordinary tableware

One object concentrates that history particularly well. Gallé’s Mushroom Lamp uses three mushroom forms to suggest stages of human life. It sits in the “Masterpiece Room,” a gallery that later received recognition at the 2018 INSIDE World Festival of Interiors

The exhibition design itself came out of disagreement. Danish architect Johan Carlsson wanted darkness, color and directed light to heighten the objects; French glass specialist Didier Largot argued for a more historical and scholarly presentation. According to the museum project account, the argument continued until a dinner of samgyeopsal and soju helped the two settle on the final approach. Carlsson then supervised display cases installed so tightly that staff recalled the effort to keep even dust from entering

History

Ando completed Genius Loci in 2008 as part of the Seopjikoji resort landscape, close to his Glass House. It was initially used as a meditation space

The museum project began in 2016 with plans to add storage and exhibition functions without losing the character of the existing building. The transformation brought in Carlsson for exhibition design and Largot for appraisal and assembly of the glass collection. Yumin Art Nouveau Museum opened in June 2017

The new use also changed how the building’s controlled light worked. Outdoor concrete and volcanic stone still frame sky, lighthouse and sea, while the galleries use darkness, lit cases and colored glass to isolate individual works. A mirrored installation called Shining Glass near the entrance reflects both the visitor and the Seopjikoji landscape
