Construction of the National Urban Architecture Museum in Sejong has been completed, giving Korea’s National Museum Complex its second major institution and moving the project toward a July 2027 public opening. The museum follows the Children’s Museum, which opened in 2023, and is intended to become both an exhibition venue and a research hub for urban and architectural culture.
The completed building has about 21,091 square meters of floor area across two basement levels and three floors above ground. Exhibition work by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will now fill the building before opening. The museum sits within a larger government plan to concentrate several national institutions in one cultural district while allowing them to share preservation, research and operating infrastructure.
A museum complex taking physical shape
The wider complex is still being built out. A design museum and a digital cultural-heritage center are planned for 2029, followed by a national records museum in 2030. The National Folk Museum is also expected to move to Sejong before 2031. Together, those projects are intended to turn the area into a cluster where museums keep distinct collections and missions but share storage, conservation and research capacity.
For Sejong, the completion is significant because it shifts the National Museum Complex from a long-term construction plan into a functioning cultural district with multiple institutions at different stages of operation. The Urban Architecture Museum will not open immediately, but the building milestone fixes a clear next phase: exhibition installation through the coming months, followed by a scheduled public debut in July 2027.
