Wonju’s Gangwon Gamyeong has been selected for the Cultural Heritage Administration’s 2027 national heritage media-art program, securing a total project budget of 1.2 billion won. The funding package includes 600 million won from the national government, 180 million won from Gangwon Province and 420 million won from Wonju. The selection gives the historic provincial-government complex a new technology-led interpretation project for 2027.
Planned content includes a media facade and hologram using lacquerware imagery on Seonhwadang, laser firefly effects around Pojeongnu, AI and AR experiences, and programming linked to Wonju Maeji Nongak. The plan combines digital presentation with buildings, objects and intangible heritage already associated with the site rather than creating a separate attraction elsewhere.
A wider heritage package for Wonju
The media-art project is part of a wider heritage package for Wonju. Five additional heritage-utilization projects were selected at the same time with a combined budget of 525.5 million won, expanding the city’s funded program beyond Gangwon Gamyeong alone.
