Veteran cartoonist Kim Wooyoung, known for the long-running children’s comic “Dungttangji,” died on September 24, 2026, at the age of 87. Born in 1939 in Seoncheon, North Pyongan Province, he fled to Busan as a child and later graduated from Donggwang Middle School and Haedong High School.

He began his career in 1956, when he published the comic “Waterwheel” as a third-year middle school student. His pen name was formed from the names of illustrator Woo Kyung-hee and General Choe Yeong, and he later legally changed his name to Kim Wooyoung.
