Two Goryeo-era shipwrecks, Mado 5 and Mado 6, have been identified in the waters off Taean, adding to evidence of the dynastyโ€™s maritime supply network. Mado 5 yielded 54 artifacts, including an anchor stone, rope, rice sheaves and bronze vessels, along with 26 wooden tags indicating cargo gathered in 1207 before the vessel sank while sailing toward Gaegyeong in 1208.

The tags from Mado 6 point to cargo sent from areas corresponding to modern Sacheon and Jinju in Gyeongsang Province, marking the first confirmed vessel from that departure region found in the waters. The discoveries offer new material for reconstructing how regional grain and goods were shipped to the Goryeo capital and how vessels navigated the hazardous route through Mado.
