The Danwon High School 4.16 Archive, documenting the lives of students lost in the 2014 Sewol ferry disaster, has been added to UNESCO’s Memory of the World Asia-Pacific regional list. The archive contains 235,220 records, including a classroom calendar left at April 2014 and a school-trip itinerary found after the ferry was salvaged.
The designation recognizes records of the students’ everyday lives, public mourning, and families’ and survivors’ recovery efforts; it is a regional listing separate from UNESCO’s international register, where Korea’s Hunminjeongeum Haerye and Nanjung Ilgi are included.
