South Korea's estimated greenhouse gas emissions fell 0.9 percent in 2025 to 685.71 million tons, according to the government's provisional inventory. Net emissions nevertheless increased because major wildfires in North Gyeongsang reduced the amount of carbon absorbed by forests. The figures show that a modest drop in gross emissions can be offset when natural carbon sinks are damaged.
