South Korea’s benchmark KOSPI jumped more than 4% on October 21, prompting the Korea Exchange to activate a buying-sidecar mechanism for the first time in about two months. The measure took effect in the main KOSPI market at 10:51:56 a.m. as the rapid advance triggered the exchange’s preset threshold.

At the time of activation, the KOSPI 200 futures price stood at 904.84 points. That was 44.94 points, or 5.22%, above the reference price of 859.90 points. The buying sidecar was triggered after the futures price remained at least 5% above its reference level for more than one minute.

The mechanism temporarily suspended the effectiveness of program buy orders in the securities market for five minutes. It was intended to slow the transmission of a sharp futures-market move into a concentrated wave of automated buying in the cash market, rather than to halt trading across the market.

A safeguard for a rapid upward move

The direction of the measure is important. This was a buying sidecar imposed during a steep rise, not a selling-side intervention designed to ease pressure during a market decline. The exchange applied the rule after the required price movement and duration were both recorded.

Investors will next watch whether the sharp gains persist after the temporary restriction ends and whether KOSPI 200 futures remain elevated relative to their reference price. The confirmed figures establish the scale and trigger of the intervention, while the available reporting does not identify a specific cause for the broader rally.
