Girls’ Generation is adding a new official unit: HRS, made up of Hyoyeon, Yuri and Choi Sooyoung. The trio will release its debut digital single Skibidi on August 31, according to SM Entertainment. The release contains two tracks, the title song Skibidi and Lowkey in Love. SM describes the title track as moving from house into hip-hop, while the accompanying song takes a retro dance-pop approach. The unit has an unusual origin for a formal K-pop release.

It grew out of recurring comedy and variety content on Hyoyeon’s YouTube channel, where the three members developed the HyoRiSoo concept before turning it into an actual music project. That makes the release more than another anniversary-era collaboration: it is a case of fan-facing digital content becoming a real subunit campaign. The key next step is the August 31 release and how SM positions HRS alongside Girls’ Generation’s existing group and solo activities.
