Authorities in Suwon have captured the Nile monitor that had been roaming the Gwanggyo area for 11 days. The roughly 70-centimeter lizard was caught near a stream by Hongjae Library at about 11:37 a.m. on August 22 after a worker doing vegetation work spotted it and alerted police.
City officials and firefighters responded and secured the animal without reported injuries. The monitor had first drawn public attention on August 11, prompting repeated searches around nearby residential and walking areas. The capture ends the immediate safety concern for residents and gives authorities a chance to determine how the non-native reptile came to be loose in the city.
