Gyeongbuk and Busan have been selected for South Korea’s first cross-regional regulatory-free zone, creating a shared testbed for new marine-leisure and maritime-safety technologies. The designation was approved by the Regulatory Free Zone Committee, according to Maeil Shinmun.
The marine-leisure zone is one of the new cross-regional zones approved by the government and will receive 12 regulatory exemptions. The project is designed to cover different marine environments, from beaches and coastal waters to ports, allowing tests of autonomous leisure vessels, marine-safety monitoring and unmanned rescue technology.
The important change is that the regulatory test area is no longer confined to a single local government. That can make it easier to test systems that need to operate across different coastal conditions and administrative boundaries. The designation itself does not guarantee commercial success, however. What matters next is whether the exemptions translate into sustained trials, working safety standards and technologies that can move from demonstration into regular use.
