1100 Highland

Character

At 1,100 metres on Hallasan’s western slope, 1100 Highland places a roadside viewpoint and rest area opposite a Ramsar mountain wetland, giving direct access to high-elevation Jeju scenery and ecology

More than 16 small mountain wetlands lie discontinuously across the highland, ranging from areas that hold visible water to basins where only traces remain. The flat terrain and low-permeability layers beneath it retain runoff and subsurface water

A 675-metre wooden boardwalk crosses the wetland area, using information boards to identify vegetation and wildlife. Water pooled in lower areas functions as a drinking source for animals

The experience

From the rest area and viewpoint, visitors cross the road directly into the protected wetland on a level boardwalk

Along the boardwalk, some wetland basins hold open water, others are partly vegetated, and still others have become difficult to distinguish from surrounding land

Beside the rest area, a memorial park commemorates mountaineer Go Sang-don, the first Korean to summit Mount Everest. His statue, the white deer-shaped Baekroksang and Baekrokbi add a mountaineering-history layer to a place whose main appeal now comes from road access and wetland ecology

History

Road 1100 was completed in 1973. The 36.6-kilometre route crosses Hallasan between Jeju City and the Jungmun area and takes its name from the 1,100-metre high point reached here

That road made this section of Hallasan accessible as a roadside stop rather than only as mountain terrain. The rest area, viewpoint and Go Sang-don memorial park developed around the high point, while the wetland across the road gained separate ecological protection

In 2009, the 1100 Highland Wetland was designated as a wetland protection area and registered under the Ramsar Convention. The designation brought regular provincial monitoring under a wetland conservation plan and in-depth national surveys every five years. A water-level monitoring system tracks how the wetland retains and releases water

Before you go

Road conditions matter more here than at a normal roadside viewpoint. When authorities close Road 1100, bus 240 is rerouted away from the highland, so winter or severe-weather access can change even when lower parts of Jeju remain clear
