Anjirang Gopchang Alley
Anjirang Gopchang Alley turns roughly half a kilometre of Daemyeong-dong into a specialist strip of about 50 gopchang and makchang restaurants
Seasoned gopchang, makchang, pork heart, casual group dining, local drinking culture and a food-focused evening near Apsan
A compact 500-metre specialist food street with roughly 50 restaurants, closely spaced storefronts, public-road access and a strong late-afternoon-to-night dining rhythm
The concentration is the attraction: dozens of grills turn an inexpensive Daegu drinking food into a district where preparation, marinade and shop style can be compared within a few blocks
Fifty grills on half a kilometre
Anjirang Gopchang Alley packs about 50 food businesses into a 500-metre run between Anjirang Market and the road toward Anjiranggol. Gopchang and makchang dominate the signs, and many tables revolve around seasoned pork intestines grilled in long pieces before they are cut into bite-size portions
Restaurants work with much of the same basic material, but cleaning, preparation, marinade and side dishes vary from shop to shop. Walking a few blocks before choosing a table makes the alley read like a specialist market: the category stays fixed while each kitchen adjusts the details
A crisis multiplied one restaurant
Chungbuk Restaurant began serving seasoned gopchang around 1979. The cluster remained modest for years, then expanded after the 1998 financial crisis as more people opened gopchang businesses to make a living. Restaurant numbers rose sharply after 2000, and by the mid-2000s the road had become a recognizable specialist alley
Affordability remained part of the model as the street grew. Merchants bought ingredients jointly to hold costs down; later programs added common branding, signage and food-hygiene work. The alley was named one of Korea's five major food-theme streets in 2012 and, with nearby Apsan Café Street, received a Korea Tourism Star in 2018
The marinade is the common language
Daegu-style yangnyeom gopchang gives the street a shared baseline. The common marinade uses a loose makjang soybean-paste base sharpened with red chili powder, chives and chopped chili. The meat is grilled, then cut at the table; individual shops distinguish themselves through cleaning methods and seasoning, and some push the format further with variations such as cheese gopchang
Menus usually extend beyond one cut: gopchang, makchang and pork heart are common choices, making a mixed order useful for understanding how texture and preparation change across offal cuts
Before you go
The simplest approach starts from Anjirang Station and follows the alley south through the full restaurant cluster before choosing a table. Apsan Park, the observatory and Apsan Café Street sit naturally in the same half-day route, with Anjirang working best as the meal at the end rather than as a long standalone sightseeing stop
