Banpo Hangang Park & Banpo Bridge Moonlight Rainbow Fountain

Thirty-eight main pumps feed 380 sets of swing nozzles along Banpo Bridge. Spread across both sides of the crossing, the Moonlight Rainbow Fountain runs for a combined 1.14 kilometres — long enough to enter Guinness World Records in 2008 as the world’s longest bridge fountain

Below Banpo Bridge, Jamsugyo forms the lower deck of the same crossing. That stacked structure is the key to the place. The upper bridge carries the fountain above the river; the lower bridge sits much closer to the water and can be closed to vehicles for pedestrian events. One piece of transport infrastructure therefore produces two very different public experiences at different heights

The experience

The fountain is easiest to understand from the Banpo side of the river, where the illuminated jets read as one continuous mechanical line along the bridge. Programs run in 20-minute blocks, so the riverfront alternates between an ordinary bridge and a large mechanical performance. Wind, rain forecasts and high river turbidity can stop a session even on a scheduled day

During the recurring car-free festival, about 1.1 kilometres of the lower bridge are closed to vehicles and used for walking, markets, performances and other public programs. By 2026, the festival had drawn 6.47 million cumulative visitors since beginning in 2022. The bridge itself becomes the event ground rather than merely the route to it

The wider Banpo riverfront connects the bridge to Moonlight Square, the floating Some Sevit complex and walking routes toward Seorae Island. A 2026 Seoul night-walk program used those elements as one continuous Banpo route, with the fountain functioning as its illuminated bridge landmark

History

The Moonlight Rainbow Fountain was installed as part of Seoul’s Hangang Renaissance program in 2008. Its total 1,140-metre fountain length was certified by Guinness World Records that November, turning a road bridge into one of the most visible pieces of the city’s effort to make the riverfront a recreational public space

The lower Jamsugyo deck later became another experiment in changing how the crossing could be used. Seoul began the recurring Car-Free Jamsugyo Bridge Festival in 2022, closing the lower bridge to vehicles on selected Sundays and filling the roadway with pedestrian programs. The event continued to expand through 2026, when spring and autumn editions again occupied the bridge and adjacent park

Before you go

Banpo works differently by day and after dark. The riverfront, lower bridge and walking routes are useful without the fountain, but the main fountain program is seasonal and condition-dependent. For an evening visit, arrive early enough to walk the park before a scheduled session; if the fountain is suspended, the stacked bridge and riverfront still remain the core physical experience
