Cheonan Arts Center is a 2012 performing-arts complex built around a 1,642-seat proscenium hall with a cross-shaped stage, rotating rear stage and orchestra pit, giving the city full-scale production capacity for major performing arts

The main theater features left, right and rear stage areas that form a cross around the principal stage, with rotating-stage functions at the rear. The orchestra pit can accommodate roughly 60 to 80 players, and the full stage system was designed for productions involving around 230 performers

A 443-seat small hall handles work that benefits from a closer scale and an open-stage format. Exhibition space, a culture center, rehearsal rooms for municipal arts groups and an outdoor stage broaden the complex beyond the two auditoriums

The experience

The character of a visit depends heavily on the program. A large opera or touring musical uses the main hall’s stage depth and backstage machinery; chamber-scale work, theater and smaller concerts can move into the 443-seat hall. Exhibitions and academy programs operate on their own schedules

The large hall was designed for productions requiring an orchestra pit, moving stage systems and substantial backstage capacity. The small hall keeps the audience closer to an open stage and supports a different scale of performance

Current programming continues to move across those formats, from orchestral and choral concerts to opera, drama and local artist series. The building therefore functions as regional production infrastructure as well as an event venue

History

Construction began in March 2010 and the building was completed in May 2012. The finished complex occupied a roughly 34,000-square-metre site, with about 24,500 square metres of floor area across four above-ground and two basement levels

Cheonan Arts Center officially opened on September 3, 2012. Its first major stage production followed days later with the musical *Gwanghwamun Sonata*, establishing from the outset that the new hall was intended for large professional touring work as well as municipal programming

The center filled a long-standing gap in a rapidly growing city that lacked a dedicated large performing-arts venue of this scale. Its two theaters, art exhibition functions and education spaces placed several cultural uses under one institution rather than scattering them across smaller civic facilities

There is no single all-day visitor schedule for the complex: performances, exhibitions and culture-center programs publish their own times and ticket conditions. The center sits in Seongnam-myeon outside central Cheonan, so the event start and return journey are more important planning constraints than the size of the building itself
