A glass wall in Daegu Art Museum’s 2025 annex turns part of the collection store into exhibition space. Works remain in a functioning storage environment while visitors can look directly into the racks

That addition changed the balance of a museum long known mainly for temporary exhibitions. The original building still carries the large UMI Hall and main galleries, while the connected annex adds Gallery 6, education space and visible storage. Permanent displays of Daegu modern painting now give the city’s own art history a steadier presence between changing shows

The collection reaches beyond local art, but Daegu remains the institution’s strongest subject. Research, acquisitions and exhibitions repeatedly return to the city’s modern and contemporary artists, placing regional work inside wider Korean and international art histories

The experience

The main building is organized around a tall central hall with galleries opening from it, so large installations can occupy the museum before a visitor enters a conventional exhibition room. The annex extends that route without feeling like a separate institution

Visible storage is the most unusual stop. It exposes the normally hidden side of museum work — racks, storage density and the practical fact that most collected works are not simultaneously installed in galleries. Nearby permanent and collection-focused displays turn that backstage view into part of the museum’s display logic

The museum and Daegu Kansong Art Museum stand only a short distance apart on the same art-museum road. They serve very different collections, but the shared shuttle and bus access make them an unusually easy two-museum pairing

History

Daegu began building a municipal art museum in May 2007 after years of debate over the city’s need for a dedicated contemporary-art institution. Construction was completed in May 2010, and Daegu Art Museum opened to the public in May 2011

Its early years emphasized large temporary exhibitions, international exchange and research into Daegu’s modern and contemporary art. The city’s own artistic history became an increasingly explicit institutional subject through collection building, archival work and exhibitions devoted to regional artists

A second major phase began when Daegu secured an adjacent building in 2022 for expansion. Remodeling started in 2023 and was completed in late 2024

The annex opened in January 2025 with Gallery 6, education facilities and a visible storage area. The expansion also supported longer-running collection displays, shifting more of the museum’s identity toward the works it owns and preserves rather than relying almost entirely on rotating exhibitions

The museum and Daegu Kansong Art Museum share the same hillside cultural area and public-transport approach. Daegu Art Museum is the stronger choice for modern and contemporary art and the city’s own art history; the annex and visible storage are worth including even when the main temporary exhibition is the initial reason for visiting
