Daejeon Museum of Art treats the city’s scientific identity as an artistic subject through a recurring Art and Science Biennale built around technology, nature and human experience

That thread sits beside a second long-term task: constructing a history of art made in Daejeon. The museum has used its collection, archive and exhibitions to recover local artists and place them inside wider Korean art history, including projects that deliberately challenged Seoul-centered narratives

The collection now exceeds 1,400 works across painting, sculpture, photography, craft, print and new media. Open Storage adds a physical counterpart to that research role by putting collection material and conservation logistics into public view

The experience

The main building is broad rather than intimate, with several galleries, an auditorium, seminar rooms, education facilities and storage spread across a two-level structure in Dunsan Grand Park

Current collection displays give Open Storage a distinct rhythm from the temporary galleries. Installation and new-media works can appear alongside the crates and specialized storage systems used after large works are dismantled, making the practical life of a collection visible after an exhibition closes

Programming changes substantially through the year. Some visits lean toward major temporary exhibitions; others foreground the municipal collection, local artists or the Art and Science Biennale. Lee Ungno Museum stands next door, so the two institutions can be combined without moving to another district

History

Construction of Daejeon Museum of Art began on June 29, 1995 and was completed in December 1997. The city established the museum’s operating ordinance in March 1998, and the museum opened on April 15 that year

From the start, the institution combined exhibition work with support for the local art scene and public education. Collection building gradually became a second institutional backbone, with acquisitions spanning most major modern and contemporary media

In 2000, the museum launched Daejeon FAST, an international art-and-science project developed with research and cultural institutions in a city already strongly identified with science and technology. The project later evolved into Project Daejeon and then the Daejeon Art and Science Biennale

The museum has also built a more explicit local-art chronology. Collection and archive projects have revisited Daejeon artists from the mid-twentieth century onward, while Open Storage has expanded public access to holdings that previously remained largely behind the gallery system
