Character

Look closely at Fe01’s robots, animals and dinosaurs and the source material stays visible: discarded car and motorcycle iron has been cut, welded and recombined into an outdoor collection of roughly 1,200 junk-art sculptures

The name makes the material explicit. Fe is the chemical symbol for iron, and the project’s own introduction connects that choice to Ulsan’s identity as an industrial city. In Seosaeng, an area also shaped by energy infrastructure, Fe01 uses heavy industrial material to create a cultural destination on the city’s outer edge

The collection was made by dozens of artists, and its scale changes the effect. A single scrap-metal robot can be a novelty; hundreds of figures spread across the grounds turn recognizable vehicle parts into a repeated visual language

The experience

The outdoor field is the main event. About 1,200 works are divided among five themes — Robot Series, Expansion of Origins, Imagination Zoo, Jurassic Park and Movie Series — so the visit moves from mechanical bodies to animals, dinosaurs and characters without losing the common material underneath them

Up close, the pleasure is partly forensic. A curve, joint or piece of machinery can still suggest its earlier industrial use even after it has become part of a jaw, limb or armor plate. The art asks the visitor to recognize both versions at once: scrap component and invented creature

Workshops and activity programs extend the upcycling idea, but the outdoor sculptures already make the argument physically. Their size and number give reuse a weight that would be easy to lose in a smaller environmental-art exhibition

History

Fe01 opened in August 2022 with a special junk-art exhibition and the Art Seosaeng opening program. The project described itself from the beginning through iron, recycling and the industrial identity of Ulsan

An Ulsan cultural profile described around 26 participating artists and roughly 1,200 works spread over the grounds. The venue moved quickly from local project to tourism infrastructure: in July 2023, the Korea Tourism Organization selected it as a Korea Unique Venue

The chronology is short, but the local context is older. Ulsan’s manufacturing economy supplies the cultural reference point, and Seosaeng’s energy infrastructure gives the project’s emphasis on industry, environment and reuse a specific setting

The outdoor sculpture collection carries most of Fe01’s identity. The grounds are the main event; the indoor gallery is secondary to the sculpture field. The five themes are broad enough to browse without needing a prescribed route

The location in Ulju-gun favors driving or taxi access; Fe01 provides parking and lists tourist-taxi options. Groups of 20 or more can reserve an exhibition explanation in advance
