Gongju Sanseong Market spreads across five named market streets and about 550 shops in the old city below Gongsanseong. A covered arcade links 58,880 square meters of food, clothing, household goods and specialist retail, giving the market the scale of a small commercial district
The market also has its own merchant-run radio station, Sori Maru. It grew out of the culture-tourism market program that followed Sanseong Market’s selection for specialist-market development in 2012, adding broadcasts and community events to an everyday commercial district
The experience
The five streets are useful orientation points because the product mix changes as the market spreads through Sanseong-dong. Clothing and textile shops cluster strongly on Streets 2 and 3; food, butcher shops and rice-cake businesses recur on Streets 2 and 5; Street 4 adds pharmacies and medical businesses to the retail mix
A Food Alley concentrates prepared meals inside the wider shopping district. Gongju’s chestnut products are the most place-specific purchases: chestnut makgeolli and chestnut sweet rice cake connect the market directly to one of the city’s best-known agricultural specialties
Sanseong Market also sits inside Gongju’s old-city walking network. The city’s Royal Old Downtown Course links Gongsanseong Fortress, the market, Jung-dong food streets, Jemincheon and former civic buildings in a loop of about 2.9 kilometers
History
Market trading in this part of Gongju predates the current Sanseong Market institution. Gongju’s own old-city history traces the lineage to a periodic market from the late Joseon and early modern period, moved toward Daetonggyo and Jemincheon during the city reorganization of 1918
The present market is officially dated to 1937. As Gongju’s permanent commercial center developed, the market became embedded in the streets below Gongsanseong and alongside Jemincheon rather than occupying a purpose-built standalone hall
Modernization focused on keeping that old-city role viable. In 2011 Sanseong Market was named among 50 traditional markets recommended for visitors; in 2012 it entered a specialized market-development program that linked commerce with nearby heritage and tourism. The customer center, cultural park, merchant radio and covered arcade belong to that later phase
