Jeonju Nambu Market stacks different eras of commerce on top of one another: roughly 800 traditional-market shops occupy the blocks below Pungnammun, while the second floor—once filled with empty shops and storage—became the Youth Mall that helped revive the market from 2011

The market spreads through ten shop buildings and riverside stalls at the south edge of Jeonju’s old city. Produce, dried fish, medicinal herbs, textiles, furniture, prepared food and household goods give the ground-floor lanes the range of a full city market

Upstairs, the scale changes. The Youth Mall reused underused space in Building 6 for small restaurants, cafés, design shops, books and handmade goods. Jeonju began the project in 2011; the model was later copied by youth-merchant programs in other traditional markets

The Friday–Saturday night market adds a third rhythm after dark. It opened in 2013 and uses the old market for a tighter food-focused program, drawing a different mix of vendors and dishes into the same commercial blocks

The experience

Pungnammun is the clearest visual anchor. The gate stands at the market’s northwest edge, with Jeonju Hanok Village and Jeondong Cathedral immediately beyond it; the market then stretches south and east through covered lanes toward the Jeonjucheon river

The first floor remains the working market. Food shops sit beside produce, household goods, herbs, dried seafood and textiles, so movement follows intersecting commercial lanes instead of one curated visitor sequence. The Youth Mall is reached upstairs, where smaller storefronts and cultural spaces occupy what had been underused second-floor space

On Friday and Saturday evenings, the night market concentrates activity around food. Daytime trading and the evening program overlap physically but serve different purposes, giving the same market a second use pattern within the week

History

Trading outside Jeonju’s south gate predates the present institution. VisitKorea traces Nambu Market to the Joseon-era Nammunbakk market; the regular public market was formally established in 1905

A major rebuilding in 1936 helped establish the present Nambu Market name. At its commercial peak, the market played such a large role in the regional grain trade that Korean tourism material records rice prices being set there

By the early twenty-first century, changing retail patterns had left parts of the market underused. Jeonju’s 2011 Youth Mall project placed young merchants in empty second-floor shops. The city later described it as the country’s first model of its kind, and similar youth-market programs followed elsewhere

The night market opened in October 2013. It added a weekend evening program to the existing daytime market and became another widely copied element of Nambu Market’s revival

The market is physically easy to combine with Pungnammun and the west edge of Jeonju Hanok Village. Ground-floor lanes, the upstairs Youth Mall and the riverside edge are separate zones, so a quick food stop and a full circuit cover very different amounts of space
