At Jinju Jungang Market, the day starts before most of the city is awake. Vendors begin setting up around 2:00 a.m.; the dawn market runs through the morning with vegetables, fish and other produce changing hands before the regular shops fully take over

That early trade is only one layer of a large permanent market. A retractable arcade runs for about 980 metres across lanes divided broadly between hanbok and fabric shops, food alleys, agricultural and fishery goods, and general retail. Roughly 850 shops operate across the district

The second floor changes the age and scale of the businesses again. Jinju opened the Bidangil Youth Mall there in 2017, using upper-floor market space for small food businesses, workshops and retail run by younger merchants

The experience

A morning visit can catch the transition between two versions of the market. The dawn sellers and auction activity thin out toward late morning while the permanent shops, restaurants and fabric stores settle into their daytime rhythm

The food lanes are closely tied to Jinju rather than a generic market menu. Yukhoe bibimbap, Jinju naengmyeon and market snacks appear alongside dried seafood and produce brought in from the wider inland and coastal region. The connected Nongae Market extends the food geography with its noodle-focused lanes

The arcade makes the market feel larger than a single hall. It connects long runs of ground-floor stalls while stair and elevator access lead to the youth mall above. Older wholesale and retail functions dominate the ground floor, while newer small businesses occupy the upper level

History

Jungang Market traces its formal origin to the Jinju Sangmusa established in 1884. It developed from a periodic five-day market into a permanent commercial center for western Gyeongsangnam-do, drawing agricultural goods from the Jirisan region and seafood from the southern coast

The market remained a working distribution point even as its visitor-facing identity changed. In 2011 it was designated a cultural-tourism market, and in 2015 the name Jinju Jungang Yudeung Market was officially shortened back to Jinju Jungang Market

A newer layer arrived in 2017 with the Bidangil Youth Mall on the second floor. Jinju continues to recruit young merchants into the space, so the upper level is still part of the market’s active business structure rather than a completed heritage project

Jungang Market and the adjoining Nongae Market function as one continuous downtown market area, but their food streets and entrances are not identical.
