Midongsan Arboretum

Character

Midongsan Arboretum is large enough to offer four official walking circuits from 1.7 to 8.6 kilometers. The short route stays around the visitor core; the longest climbs onto Midongsan’s forest roads and mountain paths, passing conifer stands, genetic-conservation plots and planted forest on the slope

That scale supports a collection of 1,593 plant species and 313,580 individual plants in the arboretum’s current inventory. Maple, aquatic, metasequoia, rock, hibiscus, succulent and carnivorous-plant gardens occupy only part of the site. Forest research, propagation and education facilities sit among them

The Forest Science Museum makes that working role visible indoors. Its exhibits include a branch specimen from Jeongipumsong, forestry documents, wooden artifacts, ecological displays and material on forest management. Midongsan functions as a public garden and as part of Chungcheongbuk-do’s forestry infrastructure

The experience

The official route system sets the scale of a visit. The 3.5-kilometer exploration course links the visitor center with the genetics collection, greenhouse areas, metasequoia path, aquatic garden, maple garden, rock garden and Forest Science Museum. Longer routes move away from the display gardens and into planted forest

A 128-square-meter carnivorous and air-plant house sits within the same estate as an 8-kilometer forest road. The 3,000-square-meter aquatic garden and 5,000-square-meter maple garden read as designed collections; farther uphill, larch, birch and native woodland create a much broader landscape

The arboretum runs forest interpretation, children’s forest programs, woodcraft classes and professional training, including arborist education. The programs operate across the same grounds as the collections

History

Midongsan Arboretum opened on 4 May 2001 as a provincial arboretum serving research, plant conservation, forestry technology and public education. In 2011 it was designated Public Arboretum No. 35 by the Korea Forest Service

Its mission has expanded with the site. Plant collections, genetic-conservation areas, the Forest Science Museum, forest-education facilities and specialized gardens now occupy a campus that extends far beyond the original visitor gardens

Trees that began as young collections after the 2001 opening have matured into substantial stands, giving parts of Midongsan the character of established forest even though their planting and management remain deliberate

Before you go

Midongsan is in Miwon-myeon, well outside central Cheongju. The 1.7- and 3.5-kilometer circuits keep a visit near the main collections; the 8-kilometer routes extend into longer forest walks

The visitor center provides maps and lends wheelchairs and strollers. Public buses reach the arboretum terminus from Cheongju via route 211, with official connections listed from the intercity bus terminal and Cheongju Airport
