KORInform take

The preserved early Korean online-game software and newly player-focused displays give this museum an identity beyond nostalgia for old machines

A game preserved before it vanishes

The earliest versions of The Kingdom of the Winds (Baramui Nara) tell a story of Korean online gaming that cannot be captured by a screenshot. Preserving a game requires software, compatible hardware and knowledge of how its rules and networks once worked. Nexon's museum on Jeju has restored early editions of this pioneering online world

The institution opened in July 2013 as Nexon Computer Museum. Over time it gathered more than 16,000 objects documenting computing and game culture, including historic Apple computers, Korean PCs and game software. These are physical reminders of hardware that earlier players had to own before entering a game world

From a computer collection to players

After a major renovation, the museum reopened on 12 May 2026 as Nexon Museum. Its renewed exhibition Players: Don't Die, Continue! looks at the people who inhabit online games, rather than arranging objects only by technological age

Visitors with Nexon game accounts can connect their game histories to personalized parts of the exhibition. Characters and records drawn from titles such as MapleStory, Mabinogi and Dungeon & Fighter make a shared online past visible in physical space

For someone who never played those games, the preservation story offers a different way in. An early computer, an original game cartridge or the restored interface of an older online world shows how much technology has changed, while the social habits of cooperation and competition remain familiar

Several ways to experience one museum

Different floors mix game history with character-driven media and interactive experiences. Some themed installations rotate. The basement's MapleStory café can be entered without buying a museum ticket

Jeju's museum is distinct from the larger technology and gaming centres of Seoul. A person coming for the early computer archive may spend more time examining machines; a longtime Nexon player may find the most interesting material in accounts, avatars and game history
