The concise guided tasting makes regional Korean liquors easier to understand before committing to a whole bottle
Five small pours, five different stories
At The Sool Gallery near Anguk Station, a guided tasting moves from cloudy makgeolli to clear rice wine, distilled soju and fruit drinks. The small pours change with the monthly selection, each introducing another Korean producer
The tasting begins with a deceptively simple question: what makes two bottles of Korean rice liquor taste so different? Takju, the cloudy category that includes makgeolli, retains suspended rice particles after fermentation. Yakju is a clearer filtered rice wine. Traditional distilled soju takes a further step, concentrating alcohol by heating fermented liquor and collecting the vapour. Fruit wines introduce another set of ingredients and regional traditions. A guide can connect those differences to the bottles being poured rather than leave visitors guessing from the labels
The shelves bring together drinks made by recognised food masters, competition winners and breweries around Korea. Some bottles are from small producers that travellers would otherwise have to track down across several provinces. Visitors can buy selected products after the tasting; browsing the gallery itself is free
How a gallery found its home in Bukchon
The original Sool Gallery opened in Insadong in February 2015, at a time when traditional Korean alcohol was often overshadowed in city-centre shops by mass-market soju and beer. A public programme offered a place to meet makers and learn why Korea's brewing styles extend far beyond those familiar bottles
The gallery later moved into Hansik Space E:eum, which opened in Bukchon in August 2022. That building brought Korean food exhibitions, the Food Grand Master Center and the liquor gallery under one roof. The Sool Gallery occupies part of the first floor, alongside other Korean food displays; a café and additional cultural programmes are elsewhere in the complex
This shared setting creates a natural connection between drinks and food. A rice wine that tastes sharp on its own may be discussed alongside savoury dishes, while a fragrant fruit wine suggests a different pairing. The selection is curated, so the visit feels closer to a guided introduction than an open-ended bar session
A short tasting with room to explore
Regular tasting sessions are offered in Korean and English. The scheduled English sessions provide an especially straightforward introduction for visitors who cannot read the Korean bottle labels. The usual tasting is brief, around half an hour; its value comes from comparing styles and asking questions about rice, fermentation, filtering and regional ingredients
The gallery also hosts occasional premium tastings and brewing classes. Past programmes have compared distilled spirits made from different ingredients and invited small groups to make rice liquor with nuruk. These special sessions have separate reservations, limited places and programme-specific charges. They should not be confused with the free regular tasting
