Tongyeong Skyline Luge

Character

Every Luge run begins by going uphill. A five-seat Skyride chairlift carries riders and their carts to the start, then the return trip is gravity-powered: the rider steers, slows and stops with the cart’s handlebars

Tongyeong now has four tracks totaling 3.8 kilometres. Hairpins, tunnels and branching sections give the descent different rhythms, while the cart’s braking system leaves the speed largely in the rider’s hands

That up-and-down cycle shapes the visit more than any single track feature. One Luge-and-Skyride circuit typically takes about 15–20 minutes, and multi-ride tickets make it possible to change tracks on later descents without changing the basic route back to the top

The experience

The first step is the Skyride, which rises above the track network and delivers riders to the shared starting area. Helmets are selected before boarding, and staff give first-time riders operating instructions before release onto the track

The carts are simple to control: pulling back slows or stops, while easing the handlebars forward allows the cart to accelerate under gravity. The four tracks split and reconnect through turns, tunnels and straighter sections, so riders can choose a different line on later runs

The attraction sits opposite the Tongyeong Cable Car on the Mireuksan side of the city. From the lift and upper track area, the ride is framed by Tongyeong’s hills and coastal landscape, but the visit itself is compact and organized around repeated chairlift-and-descent cycles

History

Construction began in late 2015 as part of a tourism project beside Tongyeong’s established cable-car district. Skyline Luge opened to riders in February 2017 with a 1.5-kilometre track, becoming the first Luge installation of its kind in Korea

Demand was immediate: local reporting recorded one million rides within four months of the formal opening. Expansion followed in July 2020, when two additional tracks opened, bringing Tongyeong to four tracks with a combined length of 3.8 kilometres. The original tracks remained part of the enlarged network

Before you go

Tickets are sold as Luge-and-Skyride combinations with several ride counts, so the number of descents is chosen before or at arrival. Height rules determine whether children ride alone or tandem with an adult, and weather can interrupt outdoor operations even when the site is scheduled to open
