A low four-seat railbike, South Sea views, LED-lit tunnel and staff-operated turnaround at the far end

KORInform take

This is a complete coastal return route, not one-way transport: four-seat vehicles have occupancy-based fares and a weather-exposed ride

A hand-turned journey above the sea

At the end of Yeosu Ocean Railbike's line, workers turn the four-wheeled vehicle around by hand. The advertised 3.5 kilometres are a complete journey out and back along the South Sea, not the distance to another station. Between the open coast and an LED-lit tunnel, riders share the work of pedalling

The rails follow the shoreline beside Manseong-ri, north of Yeosu Expo Station. From low on the track, riders can look across the South Sea towards Odongdo and the ships offshore. An enclosed railcar would separate passengers from the weather; here the wind, sun and sea air enter the experience directly

The outward leg passes through a tunnel fitted with coloured LED lighting. At the end, staff physically turn each railbike so it can head back the way it came. The full 3.5-kilometre return takes about thirty to thirty-five minutes. No separate train is needed to return passengers to where they parked. This makes Yeosu different from the one-way railbike at Jeongseon, where the return journey uses another vehicle

A camera near the early part of the route can take souvenir photographs for purchase afterwards. It is optional merchandise, not a feature automatically included in admission

Four seats, but three fares

Although tickets are sold for two, three or four passengers, the operator does not maintain three fundamentally different vehicles. The bikes use a four-seat chassis, and the price changes according to how many people occupy it. Two passengers pay ₩26,000, three pay ₩31,000 and four pay ₩36,000, with the same standard rates on weekdays and weekends

Groups reserving at least ten three- or four-passenger vehicles qualify for a ten-percent reduction. There is no group discount for a two-person ticket. A child younger than twenty-four months can accompany adults without an additional charge, provided the family presents the required proof of age. The passenger count, safe seating and the ability to pedal remain separate issues

The route is usually open in rain, and the company does not supply raincoats. Weather risks are especially tangible beside open water. Strong winds of at least twenty metres per second or severe storms can stop departures for safety reasons. Ordinary rainfall alone does not automatically cancel the booking or waive cancellation penalties

The Jeolla Line returned to the sea

These are not newly laid amusement-park rails. The coastal track was once part of the Jeolla Line, the railway serving Yeosu before its alignment was modernised and the old route fell out of regular use. The railway infrastructure authority repurposed the disused seaside section between the Marae Tunnel area and Manseong crossing; a private operator opened the railbike on 27 September 2012. The original redevelopment covered roughly two kilometres of one-way track, while today's advertised 3.5 kilometres measure the complete ride out and back. Ordinary railway transport became a self-propelled coastal excursion

The LED-lit railbike tunnel sits in a landscape with another, distinct passage. Marae Tunnel No. 2 is a 640-metre single-lane road tunnel cut through natural rock in 1926 under Japanese colonial rule for military-road use. Its rough walls and passing bays survive, and accounts of its construction describe compelled labour using hand tools. A neighbouring first Marae tunnel was designed for military rice storage. Neither road-tunnel history nor the first tunnel's original purpose should be automatically assigned to the illuminated railbike passage

Manseong-ri Beach lies near the start, with Yeosu Expo Station a short road journey away. On clear days, the railbike's sea views reach towards Odongdo, the camellia-covered island linked to downtown Yeosu by a 768-metre breakwater. Its roughly 3,000 camellia trees flower chiefly in late winter and early spring, although the island is not a stop on this ride. The passing ships, rocky shore and changing sea colour offer a low coastal viewpoint unlike the city's aerial cable car

The ride remains a short excursion: pedal beside the water, pass through the darkened railway tunnel, watch the bike turned and return on the same tracks. Manseong-ri Beach or Yeosu's Expo waterfront can fill the rest of a visit
