President Lee Jae Myung arrived in Nice on September 6 for a three-night, five-day state visit to France, beginning a schedule that combines culture diplomacy with talks on advanced technology and bilateral cooperation. Lee is due to join French President Emmanuel Macron as co-chair of the Lumiere Summit, an international meeting focused on film and audiovisual industries.
The visit then moves to Paris, where Lee is scheduled for bilateral engagements from September 8. According to Korean reporting, the two presidents are expected to hold a private lunch at the Elysee Palace followed by an expanded summit with their delegations. The agenda includes cooperation in artificial intelligence, space, nuclear energy and biotechnology, as well as exchanges involving young people and science and technology.
Advanced industries move to the center
The breadth of that agenda gives the trip an economic dimension beyond the ceremonial elements of a state visit. Korea and France both have established industrial capabilities in nuclear power, aerospace, digital technology and cultural production. The meetings give Seoul a chance to seek practical partnerships in sectors where government policy, research cooperation and private investment often overlap.
Culture is also being treated as a diplomatic and commercial field rather than an add-on. The Lumiere Summit places film and video industries at the opening of the visit, while Korean reports say K-content cooperation will be discussed with Macron. That matters for Korean producers and platforms looking for wider European distribution, financing and institutional links.
The visit may also provide a venue for discussion of the Strait of Hormuz, which has become a more urgent security question for Seoul. Korean reports say the issue could come up with Macron as South Korea reviews possible military contributions. The immediate test, however, is whether the France visit produces specific follow-up projects or agreements in the advanced-industry and cultural fields now placed on the agenda.
